Press Conferences: Launch of the Blue Competence Machine Tools Initiative at European Level

bcmt17 February 2012, 10:00 am, Brussels

29 February 2012, 10:30 am, METAV, Düsseldorf

CECIMO will be holding two press conferences for the launch of the Blue Competence Machine Tools initiative at European level on 17 February 2012 (Brussels) and 29 February 2012 (METAV exhibition, Düsseldorf). This is the first ‘European’ sustainability initiative launched by a mechanical engineering sector; it aims at raising the sustainability bar in manufacturing technologies and equipment, and reaffirm Europe as a leader in greener manufacturing.

With the decision to join forces under the Blue Competence initiative, participating European machine tool makers commit to apply sustainable practices in process design and product development. The sector is determined to pool its resources and expertise to become the global technology leader in the area of sustainability and to reinforce its role in improving the quality of life in Europe. This is an important step forward to create sound, consistent, and solid criteria and standards for sustainable production and products. Blue Competence directly supports the EU Flagship initiative for a resource-efficient Europe.

2 March 2012

demat

Funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, the DEMAT project aims at decoupling production results from the material structure of machines by reducing significantly the material content of the machines and increasing their information content. The overall impact on the machine tool industry will be a drastic reduction in total-life-cycle impacts and costs of machines, as well as increased flexibility, modularity, reusability and performance. Coordinated by Tecnalia, the project comprises sixteen partners from seven European countries.

A mini conference organized by CECIMO will present to the public the DEMAT (dematerialisation) approach and the state-of-the-play in the project. Presentation by Ph.D. Juanjo Zulaika Muniain, from Tecnalia.

When: 2 March 2012, from 15:00 to 15:45

Where: CECIMO booth, Hall 16, F42

Language: English

Participation limited to the size of the booth.  No registration required.

CECIMO study on the competitiveness of the European Machine tool industry to be launched at the European Parliament

21 March 2012

compcovThe European machine tool industry represents more than a third of the global machine tool production. Europe is a world leader both in market share and in technology in this strategic key enabling sector. However, in order to remain competitive in a globalised business environment, the European machine tool industry must tackle important challenges regarding training and retaining a highly-skilled workforce, understanding and dealing with the growth of the Asian industry, and living up to the challenge of an ever-increasing race to innovation.

Based on the need for a holistic view of today’s state of the industry, CECIMO produced a comprehensive ‘Study on the Competitiveness of the European Machine Tool Industry’. This Study underlines the strategic importance of the industry in Europe, examines the new challenges that have emerged in the post-crisis period and most importantly, makes key recommendations for enhancing the competitiveness of the European machine tool industry in the globalisation era.

CECIMO is organizing a roundtable debate focused on the findings and recommendations of the study. The event will take place on 21 March 2012, at the European Parliament in Brussels. Details about the event and registration will follow shortly.

Key Enabling Technologies: final report is out

5 July 2011, Brussels

ket report

The High Level Expert Group (HLG) on Key Enabling Technologies (KET) mandated by the European Commission set out guidelines on giving European industry a competitive edge in deploying the industrial technologies of the future: micro- and nanoelectronics, advanced materials, industrial biotechnology, photonics, nanotechnology and advanced manufacturingsystems. The final report of the HLG was published on 28 June 2011. Read the EU press release.

The main conclusions of the KET final report call on decision-makers to adopt radical policy objectives to retain critical capability and capacity in Europe through a single and comprehensive approach to KETs. In particular, the group recommends that the vital importance of KETs should be reflected in the structure and funding balance in the upcoming framework for research and innovation and in the priorities of the EU's future regional policy.
